Paul Williams OBE.,DMS.,CIHM.,CCIM.,FRSA

Appointed to the Welsh Hospital Board in 1966. Selected as a National Administrative Trainee in 1969, and attached to South Western Region and Manchester University. Following a series of senior management jobs in South Wales, including Assistant General Manager, Mid Glamorgan Health Authority, was appointed Chief Executive, Bridgend & District NHS Trust in 1993. In 1999 appointed Chief Executive, Bro Morgannwg NHS Trust which is one of Wales’ largest integrated Trusts with a budget of £320M. Additionally, the Trust manages Welsh Health Supplies, which provides procurement, a logistical service for NHS Wales.  The Trust also hosts the National Leadership and Innovation Agency for Healthcare and the Informing Healthcare Programme.

Bro Morgannwg Trust employs approximately 6,500 staff and is accredited with Investors in People for the whole organisation. The Trust has always operated within budget, has some of the best waiting times in Wales, is CHKS Top 40 Trust, currently holds 8 Charter Marks and Wales Quality Centre Awards for Health and Public Service

A Former Secretary and Chair of the Welsh Division, Institute of Health Service Management and Fellow of the Institute. Past President of the Institute of Healthcare Mangers from 2002/2005. Made a Companion of the Institute in 2003 in recognition of the contribution made to the Institute.

A passionate advocate for the practice of management. Obtained a Post Graduate Diploma in Management in 1976, first joining the Institute of Management as a member that year, elected a Fellow in 1986 and awarded the honour of a Companion of the Chartered Institute of Management in 2002.

Maintained a keen interest in international developments in healthcare. Was instrumental in developing TQM in health in Wales in conjunction with Crosby Associates and Winter Park Hospital in Florida. Undertook a study of substance misuse policy in Australia, Member of the Kings Fund European Health Leadership Programme, visitor to Havard Business School and Kings Fund study tours of USA. Has developed links in the Netherlands. Part of UK NHS and Trade delegation to Nashville, Tennessee in 2003.

Undertook a number of key functions at All Wales level including Chairing the Welsh Drug Misuse Committee, leading Acute Services Review 1996, Chair of NHS Staff College Wales 1995-2001. Chairman Trust Chief Executives Group on two separate occasions. Author of “A Question of Balance” – Review of Capacity in Wales 2002.

 

Currently Chair of the National Leadership and Innovations Agency for Healthcare Board and Delivery & Support Unit Board.

 

Awarded the OBE in 2000 for services to the National Health Service in Wales.

 

A member of the Court of Cardiff University, Director of Zoobiotics, High Sheriff in Nomination for the County of South Glamorgan.
